Surfing program planned for museum
“They really do that?” is the normal response you get when you tell people, who do not live in West Michigan, that people really surf on Lake Michigan.
Surfing has long been associated with Hawaii and California. A new exhibit at the Tri-Cities Historical Museum chronicles the history of surfing on Lake Michigan from its inception when Dr. Seibold moved here from Hawaii with his homemade surfboard, right up through today. The exhibit looks at surfing culture, surfing gear and fashion, and the impact surfing has had on issues of life saving and pier safety.
The exhibit has been put together with the help of local surfers Bob Beaton and Bob Pushaw. Their contacts and efforts allowed the museum to gather a variety of surfing artifacts, pictures and stories that make up this exhibit.
Area surfers are invited to view the new exhibit on Tuesday, April 10, at 7 p.m.
